Here, Benny Benassi has come up with the ultimate builders dream; softcore pornography combined with a (surprisingly informative) series of adverts about tools and other such DIY implements.
The first such advertisement contains a young lady banging in a nail at a slow and consistent rate; it’s textbook stuff and she has clearly read the instruction manual. Is this an attempt to make reading the instruction book sexy? With the distinct lack of a manual in this shot its unlikely, but it does promote correct hammering and I’m all for that. Although after a few seconds this motion becomes too slow for my liking, and it is clear that she doesn’t actually know what she’s dealing with here. After the camera zooms out, we see that she is doing this next to what is presumably a disposable shed (or tent). Which in itself is an idea worth pitching to dragons den; I mean, what use is a shed in the winter?
The next in this series of promotions concerns a power drill. Now first, I should point out a small health and safety warning – high heeled shoes are not appropriate for drilling. She could easily lose grip and cause a massive accident; her lack of safety gear even just for her face is highly disgusting and surprising, and I am surprised that they are able to show footage of this nature in music videos. The only appropriate attire is a builders belt; and even this is amateur in comparison to that which is traditionally worn by builders. One only wonders what would happen if she were to endure a terrible accident; surely one of the first questions those lovely people on the claims direct personal insurance adverts asks relates to how well you might have protected yourself from such an incident?
The next of our drills today is a “Masonry Drill”, designed with breeze blocks in mind. Our model here is actually wearing safety goggles which is a definite plus, though she’s wearing even less than the girl featured in the last promotion; a definite negative. Handling such a heavy piece of gear she really ought to be wearing full body overalls and a helmet in addition to her goggles and headphones; the fact she then wiggles (dances is being generous) along to the music only heightens the sense of danger. You would never get this on DIY SOS.
And what now? A Belt Sander! Oh yes, the fun continues as a girl models a belt sander in a particularly slow manner. In terms of safety headgear she looks more golf club than building site, whilst as for the rest of her clothing…well the less said the better. Having looked online, I found a list of things that you should do to ensure safety whilst using a belt sander, and it makes for startling reading with regard to this example. The list, which can be found here, includes (the previously unmentioned) wearing a dust respirator for particularly dusty jobs; and seeing as she is literally blowing the dust off of her shoulder, this is clearly something of an issue.
Next up near our disposable shed is the nipple-tastic angle grinder operator. I can’t say I’m a fan of her, as she appears more interested in mouthing some words than providing an effective and efficient product demonstration. After some close up lip licking (a trademark on the average building site; indeed, all this advert has missed is a darts board, multiple copies of The Sun and a number of teacups), we move on to a heavy duty breaker – or a pneumatic drill to you and me. Heavy duty stuff this, and with the safety gloves being implied it is clear that our DIY-ette here is all about the health and safety (except for all the other stuff). She is only on screen briefly (indeed, we see more of her rear end than we do the product she is supposed to be advertising – now that’s hardly informative advertising is it), and we move on to the best dressed woman of the video so far.
With some clothes actually covering some of her body, she advertises what is a very good chainsaw, complete with tungsten blades. The demonstration is also very effective, and I now possess 14 chainsaws bought from a variety of DIY outlets (B&Q, Wickes, you know the sort). The orbital sander soon makes an appearance, and after much bouncing, one begins to suspect that this video isn’t all about the power tools. Much of the video is taken up with close ups of parts of the anatomy (lips included), whilst the dancing and mouthing along to the words could be called seductive by some. But not by me, I’m far more interested in things like Black and Decker workmates.
The best bit of this video then? The wiggling attractive girls? The bargain power tools? No. My personal favourite is the line: “Note: Clay spade and bolsters must be purchased separately.” Which I feel is conveying the general message that the video is trying to put across.
