No matter what they tell us No matter what they do No matter what they teach us What we believe is true
Boyzone are a very optimistic bunch, a far cry from the modern day generation of cynicism partly brought on by a largely incompetent media which has forced people not to believe anything that “they” (or the establishment) say. However Ronan and co. are saying “No!” to these cynics. Whatever the government says, does or forces teachers to teach them – the lads will choose to believe whatever they say. Whilst this is an admirable and in some ways charming manner to approach life, it smacks of naivety. That, or they would just be members of the IRA due to the oppression in the homeland and general anti-governmental stance involved.
No matter what they call us However they attack No matter where they take us We'll find our own way back
Boyzone continue with this theme, arguing that they will not pay heed to any insults thrown at them (Stephen Gately – take note), and however the media attacks – well, it’s irrelevant. Now, I’m sorry, but this statement smacks of hypocrisy when it comes to the wee Irishman also known as Steve (who may have been mentioned earlier), who famously outed himself to the media only because of his paranoia involving an ex-member of boyzones entourage. The fact that he was even fearful of this shows that he could not cope with whatever people called him, and as such makes this song a damning statement of LIES.
Meanwhile the boys also claim to have superior orienteering skills, as wherever they are taken (as long as they have the correct equipment, such as a compass and a map) they will always be able to find their way back without asking for directions, resorting to a Tom Tom system or checking on multimap where they might actually be. It’s a big claim that they’ll find their own way back though, as what would happen if they are left without a map (which would surely be the case – I mean, how often in films when people are dumped in a random location are they dumped with a map detailing where they are? Hardly often one would suspect).
I can't deny what I believe I can't be what I'm not I know I'll love forever I know, no matter what
The zone claims that they cannot deny what they believe (or rather, everything that everyone else tells them), that they can’t really be what they aren’t (even though Stephen Gately pretended to be gay when he really, really wasn’t) – and that they also know they’ll love forever (when it’s FACT that Stephen Gately has had multiple lovers). Lies, lies and more filthy lies. (although Stephen and a chap named Michael are very civilly partnered. Ace for them!)
If only tears were laughter If only night was day If only prayers were answered Then we would hear God say
The zone of boys then exclaim a desire for tears to be naught but laughter; something which might confuse a lot of people, for there would be much laughing at funerals and much laughing at a stand up comedy show, so people would naturally associate the two and you wouldn’t know how to react when someone laughs. Its an admirable proposition, but one that can surely only be thrown out by higher beings. A similar reaction should be used for the proposition for night to become day – animals would get confused, plants would lose the opportunity to photosynthesise, the night shift would become the day shift and people would just be working all of the time…it would just be silly. I mean, when would the nice ladies on channel 906 make an appearance? Noon? A preposterous suggestion.
And, well, as for the proposal for prayers being answered – anyone who’s seen the film Bruce Almighty will realise just how bad an idea this is. Millions would win the lottery, and even more would get the girl of their dreams – and it would just all get into a bigamistic, everyones really lucky sort of mess. Morgan Freeman says no, so no it is. Stephen Gately would probably wish for a date with Morgan Freeman, while we’re on it.
And I will keep you safe and strong
And shelter from the storm
No matter where it's barren
A dream is being born
No matter who they follow
No matter where they lead
No matter how they judge us
I'll be everyone you need
No matter if the sun don't shine
Or if the skies are blue
No matter what the end is
My life began with you
Boyzone claim that they will keep the subject safe and strong (yes, because when push comes to shove, I’d want Stephen Gately as my bodyguard), and will provide shelter from the storm. Whether this will be in a converted bungalow or under an umbrella remains to be seen, but with the reunion probably being for monetary purposes, one would put money on a cheap Sports Soccer Umbro umbrella being the only real way to shelter someone from the storm, well that they can provide anyway. Hardly impressive.
Boyzone then give some interesting justifications as to why they might be everything that we need – in their eyes, because other people are sheep following sheepdogs (who are also people) who happen to be quite judgemental (i.e. they think that being gay is newsworthy, when really it’s just an example of newszak. Yeah, newszak.). They finish this epic ballad with a touching line – but one that again is factually inaccurate or that in layman’s terms of another example of the dirty lies that they have perpetuated. They claim that their life began with the subject – which, unless the subject was a twin (which would imply incest – no thanks, no thanks), is totally and utterly inaccurate. Which is the sort of stuff I’ve come to expect from Ronan Keating.
