James Blunt - Goodbye My Lover
Did I disappoint you or let you down? Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown? 'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun, Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won. So...
Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
James Blunt would like to know if he had let down or disappointed the subject in some way. He wishes to know whether or not he should be feeling guilt, but does not specify a reason for why this is. He claims that its because he saw the end before he had begun on something but that’s clearly a daft thing to try and apologise for as all things that have a beginning have an end – as clichéd as that is, it is nothing but the truth and as such just shows that Blunt is attempting to make excuses. Poor form.
He then begins to border on apologizing for their relationship ending because the subject at hand is blind! Essentially, it appears that James Blunt is not a fan of the handicapped (once again readers I would just like to assure you that this is the wildest speculation and probably not at all indicative of the truth). Because the subject was blind Blunt saw fit to take what he felt was eternally his (he does not specify what it is, but I doubt that it is merely a free Thames Valley University pen), which is hardly a sign of a good personality (again dear readers, pure speculation).
You touched my heart you touched my soul. You changed my life and all my goals. And love is blind and that I knew when, My heart was blinded by you. I've kissed your lips and held your head. Shared your dreams and shared your bed. I know you well, I know your smell. I've been addicted to you.
Blunt believes that the subject touched his heart – presumably this therefore means that the subject in addition to being blind is also an open heart surgeon. The lack of eyesight would normally be a handicap for such a profession but clearly this is not the case. This blind open heart surgeon then gave James Blunt a new lease of life and a new sense of direction, a new sense of purpose that can only occur after a near death experience. James then appears to be sympathizing with her handicap by saying that his heart was blinded by her – and lets face it, a blind open heart surgeon is something to confuse and stun at the best of times. He then declares that he has fallen in love with this miracle of a person and apparently has been in a relationship with them; dodgy ground as patients should never get involved with doctors, as it potentially corrupts relationships as roles get confused. Poor form.
Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. You have been the one. You have been the one for me.
James Blunt is saying goodbye to the blind open heart surgeon subject, apparently once his lover and apparently once his friend. She has been great for him – I suppose saving his life is quite a kind thing to do, and Blunt is repaying her by leaving her. Something is not entirely right there, but nevertheless – perhaps that’s my failings explained. James Blunt is regarded (allegedly) as highly desirable and if this is how highly desirably males act, well.
I am a dreamer but when I wake, You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take. And as you move on, remember me, Remember us and all we used to be I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile. I've watched you sleeping for a while. I'd be the father of your child. I'd spend a lifetime with you. I know your fears and you know mine. We've had our doubts but now we're fine, And I love you, I swear that's true. I cannot live without you.
James Blunt claims that he is a dreamer, a dreamer who has had his dreams stolen by the subject! This is a shocking revelation and may go some way to explaining just why he has decided to call it a day. However, he wants her to remember him and everything about their relationship – presumably this is a form of elaborate constructive criticism so she knows how to improve in the future, and learns that stealing peoples dreams is not the way to maintain a long term relationship (akin to a scenario when a child learns not to touch a hot stove). Whether this is an act of kindness or just a sadistic pleasure Blunt gains is unsure, but it is nevertheless an interesting thought.
Blunt however watches her as she sleeps, which then gives him a creepy air that I’m not overly keen on. But then he sends a confusing list of messages that contradict the fact that he is leaving her; he wishes to father he child, to spend a lifetime with them – but all he has to do is forgive her for stealing his dreams. A major task to ask of him, and one that I don’t personally feel he is ready to complete.
And I still hold your hand in mine. In mine when I'm asleep. And I will bear my soul in time, When I'm kneeling at your feet. Goodbye my lover. Goodbye my friend. You have been the one. You have been the one for me. I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow. I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.
James Blunt holds the subjects hand in his as he tells her that he’s leaving her because of her evil thievery. He however only has the guts to do this in his sleep, showing a classic example of cowardice (enhanced by the fact that he is sleeping at her feat, in an emotion expressing huge fear – or something like that). It also appears that to add to all of this – the cowardice, the heart problems, the fact he’s leaving the woman who saved his life – that he is hollow. Empty. Just a garden gnome of a man.
An interesting and utterly hilarious image.
