He was a boy She was a girl Can I make it anymore obvious? He was a punk. And she did ballet. What more can I say? He wanted her. She'd never tell. Secretly she wanted him as well. And all of her friends Stuck up their nose. And they had a problem with his baggy clothes.
Ah old Avril’s spinning us another of her yarns. She seems to be paying attention to detail; especially of what gender the protagonists are, to such an extent it couldn’t be more obvious. After all Avril’s from a good catholic family so she would be against the story involving a same sex relationship, which is probably why she is making such a big deal about it.
The two that she describes, seem to be quite the polar opposites of one another (Romeo and Juliet anyone?), as one enjoys the gentle tones of the Sex Pistols and the like (then again considering Avril’s style of music he’s probably into Green Day and hasn’t ever heard of the Sex Pistols n.b. The punk movement started near where I live in Bromley), and the other enjoys rather a more refined taste. I tell you, there are going to be some arguments about what concerts to go to. Avril really can’t say more than that. Hmm, it really is the way you tell them isn’t it.
Bless their little hearts though, as they both seem to have deep seated feelings for one another, although being from completely different worlds that’s just not allowed (If Shakespeare were alive, he would probably be calling his lawyers by now), due to social ridicule. What a shame really as they would have made a great sitcom focus. I can hear the title music now….
He was a sk8er boi she said see ya later boi. He wasn't good enough for her. She had a pretty face but her head was up in space. She needed to come back down to earth.
Avril now mentions that the young lad, who is after the ballerina, was a skater boy (for some reason she’s using number and letter homophones, kids today…). It seems ultimately that he wasn’t good enough for her, which probably means he sucks on a skateboard and should probably consider another vocation, perhaps like skiing or tap-dancing. A shame he missed out on her really, although it would be hard to please a woman whose head is apparently in space and is waiting to come back down. This strikes me as a very strange situation, unless she has a very long neck, although the fact she can’t get back rings a little bit too much of Apollo 13 to me.
Five years from now she sits at home feeding the baby she's all alone. She turns on TV and guess who she sees. Sk8er boi rocking up MTV. She calls up her friends. They already know And they've all got tickets to see his show. She tags along, stands in the crowd . Looks up at the man that she turned down.
Wow a long time has passed since our last bit of exposition (maybe Avril really should stick to singing as her storytelling is atrocious) and a lot seems to have happened.
The ballerina has had a child and is alone at home, probably meaning she got up the duff by some randomer. However, fortune has favoured the ‘Sk8ter Boi,’ as he has managed to break into the pop-punk industry and has made it to the dizzying heights of MTV (nice bit of name dropping there Avril). Good for him though, he realized that skating wasn’t his thing and focused on something he was good at. Finally in the ultimate piece of irony the girl and her friends decide to buy tickets to see him play, and the girl realizes ultimately that she is a picky idiot. Who says fortune favours the beautiful I guess, I mean just look at Bill Gates.

Now he's a superstar slammin on his guitar to show pretty face what he's worth.
Avril really seems to be sticking the knife in now, as she almost seems to mock the girl who turned him down to ultimately live a life of mediocrity. Now there is such a thing as being gracious in victory after all.
Sorry girl but you missed out. Well tough luck that boi's mine now. We are more than just good friends. This is how the story ends. Too
bad that you couldn't see.. See the man that boi could be. There is more than meets the eye, I see the soul that is inside.
Avril continues to be a bit of a bad winner, as she now explicitly details that the ‘Sk8ter boi’ is hers and that that people shouldn’t judge on appearances. Hmm funny that considering a record company exec probably thought when he saw Avril: “she’s young and attractive, she embodies a cult style at the moment, this could make money.” Still you tell em’ Avril!
He's just a boi, and I'm just a girl.
Can I make it anymore obvious?
We are in love.
Haven't you heard how we rock each other's world?
Avril seems to be announcing to the world how much her and the boy are in love and how great their lives are. A little bit smug don’t you think? I mean she was probably one of the first people to come out and have a go at Tom Cruise for his little outburst of love on Oprah.
I met the sk8er boi I said see ya later boi.
I'll be backstage after the show.
I'll be at the studio singing the song he wrote about a girl he used to know.

What Avril’s been doing behind the scenes seems a little bit similar, to the behaviour of a groupie. Does it ever say in the song that they live together or go on many dates? Maybe Avril’s a little mixed up about what really is going on here, and really is just writing this song to say back off to other women so she can have a fair crack. Still though after this little semi-autobiographical piece what is up next for Avril. I think it’s really a question of who’s next on Avril’s enemies list. Will Avril write a song next about how a teacher said she’d fail in life and now she’s got several music awards (Gr8mmy grll anyone?)
