Love is only a feeling
I do love a good special and this weeks special is special with four articles about three absolute classics of the love-song genre; staples on Steve Wrights Sunday Love Songs, that's for true.
It's been a stressful week for this writer I have to say. Satirising Student Politics, Radio-ing and working all in-between a severe bout of man flu- I don't know how I survive sometimes, I really don't. Most of all perhaps because V-Day is one of my least favourite days of the year - and not for the conventional reasons. No, it's genuinely depressing to see a nation swept up in hysteria surrounding relationships, people unnecessarily depressed about being single (or, conversely, in long term relationships) and people spending money that just doesn't need to be spent. Call me a cynic but surely valentines day is a day just to ensure that the turnover of gift card companies such as Clintons and Hallmark and also luxurious chocolateers such as Thorntons are kept ticking over in the economic times we live in - particularly between the big seasons for both of Christmas and Easter. Ultimately it's just a corporate fad.
And on that cheery note we have ourselves subscribed to this corporate fad by making our eighth issue our 2009 Valentines Day special, even though it is in fairness a day late.
Firstly then, I have looked at Hello by Lionel Richie from a variety of angles. From a lyrical perspective:
Well it would appear that Lionel Richie has made an imaginary friend figure out of whoever the subject of this song is. Some might find this endearing and romantic, I however find it creepy.
And secondly at the video - simply a class production.
Lionel Richie, ever looking the epitome of smart casual in a top-notch white blazer, snazzy jumper, a moustache that just screams MANLY and an afro that most of us can only dream of (though perhaps that do wouldn't really work particularly well on this author).
In addition to all the joy that I'm sure Lionel and myself will give you, Dave has had a couple of looks at staple love songs. Sonny & Cher - I got you babe:
That's it readers eat it up, every last bite of the mutual happiness Sonny and Cher are ramming down our collective throats. Can you imagine being blissfully happy? Well you may as well forget about it as your imagined happiness doesn't even equal a tenth of the happiness Sonny and Cher have. Funny how it still goes down with a bitter after taste.
Aretha Franklin meanwhile is of course one of the biggest and most influential artistes of all time and makes her début here this week with Natural Woman.
So what could Arethra be if she wasn't a natural woman? An unnatural woman perhaps, which then begs the question what's an unnatural woman. I can hazard a guess it's something like Cher perhaps, or maybe Joan Rivers, i.e. someone who has had a lot of cosmetic surgery.
Lots of (genuine, not gift card generated) love,
Tom xx
