The Guru Josh Project - Infinity [video]
Tom takes us to infinity and beyond (what?) with this look at the Guru Josh project and his/their lovely, lovely piece.
00:00 - 00:30 And so we appear to have a tale of a young lady walking through what appears to be a lovely section of countryside woodland. The camera angle changes showing a house in the background that appears to be of Mediterranean design - which I'm a fan of I must admit. The slow-ish motion continues; we see one shot which is just her legs, which for those of you who need to have the obvious stated - is meant to mean that she is sexually "fit" - i.e. at the right physical stage in her life to consummate a relationship.
00:30 She is walking to the house!
00:40 There are a number of multiple angle shots as she looks into the house showing that she is confused, bewildered and possibly somewhat nervous about whatever ordeal she is about to face. We see a shot of her walking through the door. This is gripping stuff; potentially this could be a drama, a comedy or an erotic piece.
00:46 The house's furnishings are revealed; a sofa, a television set and a saxophone. At this point it is clear that this can only be an erotic film or a political thriller. To be honest I'd quite like the latter, would at the very least make a change from the majority of things on MTV Base at the moment (not that I'm watching; 120 minutes "FTW"). There is then a pan shot of some woodland outside of the house (essential) and a shot of some legs with a torso and head and additional limbs attached walking up some stairs.
1:00 She is smiling at the camera with cutaway and faded shots of the saxophone. Is she going to give us a jazz odyssey?
1:01 No.
1:02 The legs are walking past the television set, which she seductively turns on (seriously, I did not think it were possible that anyone could make the act of turning on a TV quite so sexy as she does, but by and how!). She settles down on a soft furnishing to watch vktrs* favourite key maker, Guru Josh, deliver some pumping beats to a legion of adoring fans. Allegedly. It's probably just a green screen and clever CGI...
1:21 Is she getting off on this? My hopes that this will be an epic political thriller are fading fast...there are more miscellaneous and frankly boring shots of her posing a bit and of Guru Josh having a camera go up towards him and then down again and then up and then down and some people looking like they're a bit lost and confused in the background. Definitely worth the £200k (I would guess) budget this. Definitely.
1:42 She is stripping! I hope she is going to unveil a suit and a gun holster and a Russian accent and we'll have a Cold War thriller on our hands.
1:43 She isn't.
1:44 There is some topless guy on the television playing what sounds like a good Grade 2 saxophone piece. Not a jazz odyssey per se, but a start nonetheless. This could get better.
2:23 The above continues for a good while. She has finally stripped down to a oh-so-loose bikini outfit; this could very well end up being saxophone themed soft porn. The moralist in me tells me to stop. Er, me tells me to continue.
2:31 She is wielding a mighty axe. There is so much wrong with this. I mean:
i) Firstly, why is she destroying the place? Or about to anyway. Yes, the furnishings are sparse but the foundations are there for quite an attractive villa, and I feel that destroying the wall would serve no purpose.
ii) If she is going to destroy a wall, an axe isn't really the ideal tool. She wants something a bit more sturdy and durable; like a sledgehammer.
iii) They aren't exactly subtle are they?
2:37 It's a sledgehammer!!! I was certain it was an axe. Controversy!
2:42 Product placement for Korg. Nice.
2:52 She's been dancing a bit more, it isn't exactly the most erotic or sensual thing I've seen. This is shown to cutaway clips of a crowd looking far too packed in and, to be honest, like these are not the times of their lives. Seems a bit of an odd choice for footage, or perhaps there genuinely was nothing better. Surely not another change of career for Josh...?
3:09 The sledgehammer has devastated the wall and a perfectly good television set. There is no explanation given for what is essentially mindless violence. When will they learn to give the public what they want? i.e. retro cold war political thrillers with a tinge of sexuality but mainly action, politics and Russian accents.
